The Dagaz bed is a tribute to the clash of the Roman Empire and the Barbarians, with inspiration drawn from the Scandinavian culture represented by the letter Dagaz in the Rune alphabet, and the Italian culture represented by the Ponte Vecchio, a bridge designed by Andrea Palladio in Bassano del Grappa. Matteo designed this bed to change the way we see it, making it functional, spartan, and simple at the same time.
What sets the Dagaz bed apart is its unique properties. The bed is entirely built with durmast wood and gives the illusion of floating. The bedspring is inserted in special furrows, allowing the entire weight of the bedspring, mattress, and two persons to be supported by the bed itself. This design not only provides a comfortable sleeping experience but also offers practical benefits such as easy cleaning and space-saving storage options.
The realization of the Dagaz bed involved the use of CNC machines for most of the processes, making it replicable on an industrial scale. The assembly process requires two people and takes approximately 20 to 25 minutes. The bed's dimensions are 1400 x 2000 x 500 or 1600 x 2000 x 500, providing options to suit different spaces and preferences.
Matteo's design philosophy for the Dagaz bed focused on creating a product with good design, affordability, and sustainability. The construction processes, materials, and finish were carefully chosen to ensure a high-quality product that is easy to assemble, package, and maintain. The bed's design allows for the temporary storage of various items underneath, eliminating the need for additional storage mechanisms and facilitating a better cleaning process.
The Dagaz bed has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This award acknowledges the bed's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contribution to a better world.
With its blend of cultural influences, unique features, and practical design, the Dagaz bed stands out as a functional and innovative addition to any bedroom.
